Choudhary Baldedv Singh (Amrish Puri) who's simple, cultured & born in Punjab, settled in London with his wife Lajjo (Farida Jalal) & two daughters, Simran (Kajol) & Chutki (Pooja Ruparel). Inspite of living abroad, Baldev Singh strongly believes in Indian culture & traditions. Soon he arranges Simran's marriage with his friend's Ajit Singh's (Satish Kaul) son, Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi) in Punjab. But Kajol who's college student, high tempered, adamant is in search of her dream soulmate on her own. After hearing her marriage in Punjab she compromises with her dream & forgets. Raj Malhotra (Shahrukh Khan) who's rich, carefree, college student & an NRI. Raj & Simran meet on a month long Europe trip, where both tease & play pranks on each other & dislikes each other. As usual, soon they both fall in love, too. But, when Raj realizes & tries to propose her, its already late, as Simran's dad finds out that Simran is in love with someone. He decides to pack & leave for India. Madly in love, Raj comes to India. In search of Simran & to impess Baldev singh i.e. Simran's dad. Now, will Raj be successful to impress Simran's dad & his whole family in order to marry her in traditional way?
