Simba the lion's sidekicks, Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat, narrate what they call "the whole story" ... which is mostly about themselves and the time they spent raising Simba in the jungle. Starts with Timon and where he grew up, then how he met Pumbaa. Some terrible jokes (but arent the bad ones often the best) such as "Come on Pumbaa, this storm's coming to a head" just before Mufasa's hear appears in the clouds). They turn up in the backgrounds and behind the scenes of moments from "The Lion King" throughout, and the movie is jam-packed with funny nods to other movies as well. Timon's wonderful "I love the smell of Pumbaa in the morning" cracked me up! However Timon and Pumbaa keep interrupting as if sitting in cinema seats. We just see their silhouettes, and at times it does get quite annoying, as it stops the story and the interruptions really aren't always that funny.
The one new song "Dig A Tunnel" is, I think, fantastic. It is played at the start, when we are seeing where Timon grew up, and how he was a social misfit. It's supposed to show how routine and boring his life was while being quite a fun song too, and my little cousins both love this song.
As well as the original characters, we meet Timon's overprotective mother, voiced by Julie Kavner, who also voices Marge Simpson. We meet his Uncle Max who is voiced by Jerry Stiller.
The extra features on the DVD include a match the silhouette to the disney character game and a jungle safari interactive type of game, that plays like a disneyland ride. A lot of fun for the little ones, but not so much fun for the grown ups.
For a straight to DVD movie, I enjoyed this. It's true that having watched it I will never watch the first Lion King i quite the same light again, but Hakuna Matata is great! Well worth buying, but obviously, nowhere near as good as the first.
