Nisha (karishma kapoor) who’s an lead actress & dancer in troupe. Rahul (shah rukh khan) who’s the troupe leader announces a new play named maya after the performance of nisha in bombay theatre & the play will be played after 3 months. Rahul dreams about the maya girl, who will be romantic & do dance for herself. Rahul don’t believe in love but pooja (madhuri dixit) believes in love & the soul mates made by the god. Pooja stays with her shanti aunty (farida jalal) as her parents were killed in a car accident. Ajay who’s her childhood friend & son of shanti, currently working abroad as a businessman usually receives a tape from him. Rahul starts dreaming about the maya script but he is not impressed with nisha as she is not suitable for this script. Nisha slowly fall in love with rahul. One day surprising ajay (akshay kumar) returns from abroad to meets his parents & pooja. Ajay tell pooja that he has found love. Over there rahul takes his whole troupe for party, its nisha birthday. Nisha drunk a lot due to which rahul carry her way to home where she confess her love toward. Rahul ajay takes pooja for a small trip. In a mean time ajay also propose proposes pooja for marriage. Pooja is shocked & speechless but she accepts the proposal & ajay leave joyfully for his business trip. Nisha foot is seriously injured & she can’t dance until her leg is fully healed which will take approximately 3 month. So, rahul gets tensed as time is running out coincidentally one day he meets pooja where pooja is dancing in a beats of rahul’s drum. So he get impress of her dancing talent & convince her to join his troupe as it is urgent. Slowly rahul fall in love with her. Nisha is discharge from the hospital & she sees pooja dancing, she get jealous & she takes the stage where two are engage in a dance competition of sorts. Now nisha again get foot injuring & she decides to live london where her parents are living. Slowly pooja realizes that rahul is the person whom she used to dream about but due to engaged with ajay she used to keep distance with rahul. Pooja visit her old teacher to wish her on her birthday where her old teacher realizes pooja is in love with rahul & she encourage her to follow her heart. Even her old teacher advice rahul the same thing which she toler pooja. At a wedding of two of the troupe members pooja & rahul at last realizes & feel the love. Pooja run away from him. Nisha arrives from london & see that pooja & rahul are in love which hurt nisha as she is love with rahul. In a meantime pooja record a tape for ajay that she is in love with rahul. At same time ajay phones her mom & informs her about the marriage with pooja. Now rahul gets hurted when he comes to know that pooja & ajay are going to marry soon. Rahul is busy making his play maya. Pooja & rahul are keeping distance with each other & hurting themselves by keeping silence about their love which is huting nisha because she can’t see rahul & pooja in this condition. Rahul trys to propose once again with the help of maya play & nisha trys to encourage pooja to speak out her feeling about rahul but nisha fails. Pooja is in trouble & confused between the love & duty. Soon ajay gets the pooja tapes & breaks the engagement with pooja & set her free for rahul. Now, rahul & pooja are together & happy. Maya the play get successful.
