Story in short: Mantra (Charmi) takes up the responsibility of clearing the debts of her father. The only way she can clear it off is by selling the only inherited property which is located on the outskirts. That bungalow is known for being haunted. One prospective buyer puts forth a condition that if anyone could live in the house and survive for 3 months, he would buy it. Enter Hero (Sivaji) who takes up the responsibility. Even he will be taken by surprise when his friend dies mysteriously. What is the cause of the death? Is the house really haunted? Watch the film on the screen.
Charmi already proved that she is not just a glamour doll but also is capable of good performance when there is a scope. Charmi got another scope to prove the same with Mantra. She did utilize this opportunity and delivered excellent performance. Her performance is such that she defines the expression for being scared. Sivaji is impressive in his role. Rest of the characters did their roles to content.
Technically this is a very good film. Because in these kind of films, story is secondary point. What matters is how the director could convince the point about ghosts. It will be a tight rope walk because you cannot scare the audience of ghosts and finally say it is the work of some bad guy. And at the same time, ghost stories are usually 'stories'. Director Tulasi Ram should be appreciated on how he continued with his narration till the end. And at the same time, he succeeded in generating the scary feeling.
The narration is aptly complemented by music and camera. Music by Anand is very good. Also, Upendra did crisp work with editing. Producers should be commended for taking up this film.
First half of the film goes well with a mix of comedy and horror. In the second half there are some lag moments. Director seems to have concentrated more on creating scary scenes than the flow of the cinema. The film tries to be very real but at the same time there are a few artificial things like song with Kausha, characters like Sankaranna and Mallikarjuna Rao. If these things were taken care, the film would been much better.
Overall, Mantra is a decent thriller.
